New Patients
Depending on your current dental needs, your first appointment could be an emergency appointment,
a cleaning or a consultation with the doctor. If you are experiencing discomfort we will see
you for an emergency appointment. At this appointment we will take the necessary steps to diagnose
and address your problem.
Patients who are not experiencing tooth pain or sensitivity should schedule a cleaning. Cleanings
are done with the hygienist and are typically followed by an exam with the doctor. If you feel the
need for any dental work and our schedule allows for it, the doctor will do dental work at the same
appointment. Otherwise, we can schedule all necessary appointments after your cleaning.
If you have recently had a cleaning or know that you need significant dental work done, we recommend
you schedule a consultation with the doctor. During the consultation we will most likely take x-rays
and the doctor will thoroughly examine your teeth. He will then work with you to set up the best plan
of action for your unique situation.
X-Rays
Patients frequently ask if they should get old x-rays from a previous dentist. While having old x-rays
for comparison is a useful tool, it is not a requirement. However, certain x-rays are only allowed within
a certain amount of time, specified by your dental insurance company. For example, most insurance companies
only allow a Full Mouth X-ray or Panoramic X-ray once every five years.
X-rays are useful diagnostic tools. They allow the dentist to see decay and damage inside the tooth.
Panoramic X-rays allow the dentist to check for asymmetry, growth, or other bone abnormalities while Bitewing
and Periapical X-rays are more directed at specific teeth.
Our office uses digital because they have 50 to 90 percent less radiation than conventional x-rays. Digital
x-rays also save time because images of your teeth will instantly develop on our flat screen monitors.
