Fluoride Treatments
The effectiveness of fluoride in preventing decay is well documented. When cavities begin, an application of fluoride (depending on how it is used) may reduce or in some cases eliminate the need for a filling.
Research suggests you most benefit from small increments of topical fluoride applied daily. We highly recommend that patients use a daily fluoride rinse, such as ACT or Fluoriguard to help combat decay.
For those patients who have multiple fillings or are prone to root decay, we suggest either in-office fluoride treatments or do-at-home custom fluoride trays. With in-office treatments we use a tray-like delivery system with prescription fluoride that stays in your mouth for 4 minutes. These treatments are typically done after your six-month cleaning.
Custom fluoride trays are just that, trays which are made in office to comfortably fit on your teeth. We prescribe a high-concentration fluoride gel for you to dispense nightly in your tray.
Regular Cleanings
Aside from regular brushing and flossing, getting regular cleanings is the
most important thing you can do to maintain a healthy and clean mouth. A clean
mouth is less likely to develop decay or periodontal (gum & bone) disease.
The recommended time between cleanings varies from patient to patient. Factors
that help determine how frequently your teeth should be cleaned include: age,
diet, number of restorations, periodontal history, and oral habits.
Scaling and Root Planing (RPS)
Scaling is a procedure in which plaque and calculus are removed from teeth both above and below the gum line. Root planing removes diseased portions on the teeth to make a smooth clean surface. Scaling and root planing is important because irregularities on the teeth and root surfaces harbor bacteria and plaque. The toxins produced in trapped plaque can lead to gum disease.
We can determine whether or not you need RPS. In most cases, you will be anesthetized for the procedure. We treat one half of your mouth per appointment so the full procedure takes two appointments.
It is customary to place patients who have had RPS on a 3 to 4 month cleaning schedule to maintain a hygienic mouth. Sometimes RPS needs to be done more than one time for those patients who demonstrate a predisposition to periodontal disease. Once RPS is completed, it is vitally important that you practice good brushing and flossing techniques to maintain a disease-free mouth.
Occlusal (Night) Guard
Occlusal Guards, also called bite guards or night guards, are intended to reduce the effects of bruxism and/or grinding your teeth. It is a custom-made plastic appliance that comfortably fits over your upper teeth. The guard takes two appointments, one to take an impression of your teeth and a second visit to ensure a comfortable fit and make any necessary adjustments. The guard is made of a durable plastic that protects your natural teeth and dental restorations from harmful wear down and/or chipping of teeth.
Most people only brux or grind their teeth at night and need only to wear the guard while sleeping. However, all patients are different, and we recommend you wear the protective guard as instructed. At no time should you experience soreness in muscles or joints around your face or ears, regardless of whether or not you are wearing the guard. After each use, you should clean the guard with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste to remove any plaque that may have accumulated and store in a dry place.
